Are you ready? | Cloudflare Blog Skip to content On October 11, 2026, the DNS root is scheduled to change its key-signing key (KSK) for only the second time ever. This key anchors DNSSEC’s chain of trust, which lets DNS resolvers authenticate answers using cryptographic signatures. The change is called a KSK rollover. Validating resolvers need to trust the new key before the switch, as otherwise healthy websites could become unreachable. When we wrote about the first root KSK rollover in 2018 , we had seen resolvers lose their learned trust in the new key during software upgrades or moves between machines. Publishing the key well in advance was only part of the job. We also needed to know whether resolvers had retained it, and we couldn’t give users a practical way to check. Most website operators do not need to make any changes for this rollover. If you run a DNSSEC-validating resolver, check that it trusts the new root key, KSK-2024, and follow your software vendor’s instructions to update its trust anchors if the key is missing. If you use Cloudflare for your domain's DNS or rely on 1.1.1.1 and Gateway DNS, you do not need to..."},"evidence_pages":[{"is_primary":false,"source_match":false,"url":"https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/root-zone-ksk-rollover-faq-22may26-en.pdf","final_url":"https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/root-zone-ksk-rollover-faq-22may26-en.pdf","title":"The keys to the Internet change on October 11. The root zone KSK serves as the trusted starting point for DNSSEC validation, like how the root zone serves as the starting point for DNS resolution. ● Just as one starts at the root zone to resolve a domain name anywhere in DNS, software performing DNSSEC validation trusts the root zone KSK and builds a “chain of trust” of successive keys and signatures to validate the authenticity of any signed data in DNS. [Image: Im0] What does the root zone key signing key rollover involve? ● This root zone KSK rollover process replaces the existing root zone trust anchor (KSK-2017) with a new root zone trust anchor (KSK-2024). Why roll over the root zone KSK? ● It is not good for a cryptographic key to remain in use for too long. Like any password, it needs to be changed sometimes. ● It is better to make proactive changes during normal operations when things are running smoothly, rather than react in an emergency. The Root KSK serves as the global trust anchor for DNSSEC and is managed as part of the IANA functions. We seek feedback from the community to help refine and finalize our approach before implementing operational and procedural updates. Executive Summary This proposal describes a plan for a future DNSSEC algorithm rollover of the DNS root zone, transitioning the algorithm from RSA with SHA256 (numerically algorithm 8 in the DNSSEC standard) to ECDSA P-256 with SHA256 (algorithm 13). The Root Zone KSK is a critical trust anchor, and this transition aims to enhance cryptographic strength while managing operational risks such as response size and resolver compatibility. The plan presented here follows a common double-signing approach for DNSSEC transitions, avoiding the need for pre-publication of the new algorithm’s key to comply with mandatory algorithm rules in RFC 6781. Prior to the algorithm transition, the size of the RSA-based Zone Signing Key (ZSK) will be reduced from 2048 to 1536 bits to..."}],"related_signals":[{"id":"25011c24-fc2e-4ccb-b4ee-7d0fc7172ef1","url":"https://onlylabs.fyi/signals/25011c24-fc2e-4ccb-b4ee-7d0fc7172ef1","source_url":"https://blog.cloudflare.com/transformers-on-logpush/","title":"Filter, reshape, and redact logs before export with Transformers","context":null,"kind":{"key":"post_published","label":"Writing"},"org":{"slug":"cloudflare","name":"Cloudflare (Workers AI)","category":"neocloud"},"occurred_at":"2026-10-12T14:44:59+00:00","first_seen_at":"2026-10-12T16:00:52.634067+00:00","date_source":"rss.item_date"},{"id":"8d264500-38c8-4f8a-9b6d-525db176a2cd","url":"https://onlylabs.fyi/signals/8d264500-38c8-4f8a-9b6d-525db176a2cd","source_url":"https://blog.cloudflare.com/clef-faster-cheaper-multimodal/","title":"Introducing Clef-omni with full multimodality, plus a faster Clef and a cheaper Clef-flash","context":null,"kind":{"key":"post_published","label":"Writing"},"org":{"slug":"cloudflare","name":"Cloudflare (Workers AI)","category":"neocloud"},"occurred_at":"2026-10-09T18:27:34+00:00","first_seen_at":"2026-10-09T20:00:52.907314+00:00","date_source":"rss.item_date"},{"id":"2c4739d3-2cb9-4d1a-a486-f988edb9e065","url":"https://onlylabs.fyi/signals/2c4739d3-2cb9-4d1a-a486-f988edb9e065","source_url":"https://blog.cloudflare.com/workers-on-demand-profiling/","title":"Introducing on-demand CPU and memory profiling with flamegraphs for Workers and Durable Objects","context":null,"kind":{"key":"post_published","label":"Writing"},"org":{"slug":"cloudflare","name":"Cloudflare (Workers AI)","category":"neocloud"},"occurred_at":"2026-10-09T13:00:00+00:00","first_seen_at":"2026-10-09T16:00:52.267915+00:00","date_source":"rss.item_date"},{"id":"3ace328b-c700-48ba-bcc9-38e7b4c33573","url":"https://onlylabs.fyi/signals/3ace328b-c700-48ba-bcc9-38e7b4c33573","source_url":"https://blog.cloudflare.com/deno-joins-cloudflare/","title":"Deno is joining Cloudflare","context":null,"kind":{"key":"post_published","label":"Writing"},"org":{"slug":"cloudflare","name":"Cloudflare (Workers AI)","category":"neocloud"},"occurred_at":"2026-10-09T12:50:00+00:00","first_seen_at":"2026-10-09T16:00:52.267915+00:00","date_source":"rss.item_date"},{"id":"93b4423f-72b8-4bd3-8dca-24f221399c2d","url":"https://onlylabs.fyi/signals/93b4423f-72b8-4bd3-8dca-24f221399c2d","source_url":"https://blog.cloudflare.com/radar-redesign/","title":"Bridging technical depth and usability: The story behind Radar’s redesign","context":null,"kind":{"key":"post_published","label":"Writing"},"org":{"slug":"cloudflare","name":"Cloudflare (Workers AI)","category":"neocloud"},"occurred_at":"2026-10-08T13:00:00+00:00","first_seen_at":"2026-10-08T16:00:52.332142+00:00","date_source":"rss.item_date"},{"id":"3c059079-2b80-49dc-ae00-f66ae8cccb08","url":"https://onlylabs.fyi/signals/3c059079-2b80-49dc-ae00-f66ae8cccb08","source_url":"https://blog.cloudflare.com/agentic-security-operations/","title":"Building an evidence-grounded agentic security operations harness on Cloudflare","context":null,"kind":{"key":"post_published","label":"Writing"},"org":{"slug":"cloudflare","name":"Cloudflare (Workers AI)","category":"neocloud"},"occurred_at":"2026-10-07T16:30:36+00:00","first_seen_at":"2026-10-07T20:00:54.02546+00:00","date_source":"rss.item_date"}]}
